Exports

What MakerSketch can export. STL is the file for 3D printing; STEP goes to other CAD apps, for every part: each Body exact where it can be, faceted otherwise.

From a sketch or drawing

Format What you get
DXF The 2D geometry, for laser cutters and other CAD apps.
PDF A printable sheet at a chosen scale.
SVG A vector picture of the drawing.
PNG A picture of the drawing at a chosen size.

From a part

Format What you get
STL The solid as a mesh for slicing and printing; separate pieces side by side on the bed.
3MF The solid for slicing, each piece its own object.
STEP Every Body as a solid for other CAD apps, with its name and colour: exact, or faceted (see below).

Exact or faceted STEP

An exact Body has true flat and curved faces, as other CAD apps make them. A faceted Body is made of flat facets, like an STL: it opens as a solid you can measure and build on, but a round hole is many flat faces rather than a cylinder. Export says which it wrote ("Exact STEP", or "STEP: 2 Bodies exact, 1 faceted (holes)"). Exact Bodies are built again by an exact geometry kernel, which takes a few seconds on a big part; Export shows its progress and Cancel. Bought hardware you placed (screws, magnets, inserts, bearings, motors) goes in faceted, as an assembly shows its fasteners; a reference model (a board, a camera, a display) is someone else's part, so it is left out, and Export says so ("Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W left out: reference"). A Body is faceted for now when it is shaped by:

or when the exact kernel can't build it, or builds a shape that doesn't match the part's.
